The East-West Center Research Program, Population and Health Studies, makes the results of policy-oriented research widely available in two series—Asia-Pacific Population & Policy and Asia-Pacific Population Research Reports. Research based on data from the first and second Indian National Family Health Surveys (1992–93 and 1998–99) appears in two separate series—the NFHS Bulletin and NFHS Subject Reports. These are copublished with the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) in Mumbai. East-West Center Working Papers on population and health are circulated for comment and to inform interested colleagues about work in progress.

The most comprehensive publication on population and health from theEast-West Center is The Future of Population in Asia, a comprehensive report, published in 2002, that describes and analyzes important issues in the region. This publication is intended for policymakers, political leaders, business leaders, research specialists, teachers, and others with an interest in Asia and in global population issues. The objective is to increase awareness of population trends in Asia and their critical global social and economic implications. Funding was provided by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Written by East-West Center specialists drawing upon their own wealth of experience in the region as well as information and projections from the United Nations and national governments, the report covers the period from 1950 to 2050. Discussions of current issues and future trends are accompanied by suggestions for policymakers. Major topics include:

  • Trends in fertility, family planning, and population growth

  • Behavioral trends among Asia's adolescents and young adults, with an emphasis on risk-taking behavior

  • Transformation of marriage and family patterns

  • Tradition and change in women's roles in the family and workplace

  • Economic and social consequences of population aging

  • The HIV/AIDS epidemic in Asia

  • Relationship between population trends and economic development

  • Interactions between population, natural resources, and the environment

The East-West Center also publishes Occasional Papers on population and health topics. Researchers publish their work in scholarly books and journals, and some of these outside publications have appeared in the Center's Reprint Series.
