Publications from India's First and Second National Family Health Surveys

India's first National Family Health Survey (NFHS-I) was conducted in 1992-93 and the second (NFHS-2) in 1998-99. Both surveys were coordinated by the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) in Mumbai under the auspices of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHWF). The East-West Center and ORC Macro provided technical assistance, and the United States Agency for International Development gave financial support. For NFHS-2, additional funding was provided by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

NFHS-I and NFHS-II are among the most complete surveys of their kind ever conducted in India. For NFHS-I, survey teams interviewed 89,777 ever-married women between the ages of 13 and 49. For NFHS-II, teams interviewed, 92,300 ever-married women age 15-49. Survey responses provide information on fertility, mortality, family planning, and important aspects of nutrition, health, and health care.

National and state-level reports from NFHS-I and NFHS-II are available on the NFHS website maintained at IIPS. The East-West Center also has a limited number of copies available for distribution to academics and other specialists with a professional interest in population issues in India. Send an e-mail message to Population and Health Studies. Data sets from the surveys are available from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) website maintained at ORC Macro.

The East-West Center produces two publication series based on analysis of survey results. The NFHS Bulletins are four-page policy briefs, while the NFHS Subject Reports provide more detailed analysis of NFHS results that are important for policy. Both are available on a complimentary basis. To request specific issues, contact Population and Health Studies at the East-West Center. You may also download past issues of the NFHS Bulletin and NFHS Subject Reports from this website.
